In Codenames kennen twee rivaliserende geheime diensten de geheime identiteit van de 25 spionnen. Hun teamgenoten kennen deze spionnen enkel bij hun codenaam. Beide teams gaan met elkaar de strijd aan en proberen als eerste contact te leggen met hun spionnen.
